Time To Pick A Side
A striking pattern has been traced in the political fabric across the globe post-pandemic. Distinctive policies that were once considered the sovereign right of individual countries, now seem to emanate from a common source, as if there were a global governing body pulling the strings, quietly dictating these new rules.
The latest policy that has gained traction across Australia, the UK, and the United States, and has already been enacted in Canada, revolves around misinformation and disinformation. Ostensibly aimed at filtering out falsehoods, this law risks stifling the dissenting voices that deviate from the government narrative. In Australia, this is viewed by many as yet another ploy by an increasingly authoritarian regime to suppress those who dare to hold differing viewpoints.
The question arises: who will adjudicate what constitutes misinformation? The answer, it seems, is the government. However, an alarming exemption has been carved out for the government itself, the media, and large educational institutions, including universities. If you haven’t felt the walls of censorship gradually enclosing the free spirit of the citizens of these formerly sovereign nations, it may be time to wake up and acknowledge the encroaching reality.
The hour of decision draws near. One must choose between upholding the values of freedom and human dignity, or succumbing to the yoke of totalitarianism, censorship, and subjugation. During the pandemic, various institutions – the police, medical establishments, the media, and government departments – ostensibly aligned without question to the mandates given. Yet, in the silent corners of their minds, many must have questioned the motives, recognising that the measures enforced upon the citizenry violated basic human rights.
There is no denying the increased tyranny exhibited by governments since the pandemic. An acceleration in policy and law creation aimed at subduing the populace is visible, and there is no sign of this pace abating. Therefore, it is with urgency that individuals in positions of power, including police, doctors, and military personnel, must decide where they stand. Merely following orders, when the moral compass within signals a divergence from righteousness, is no longer excusable. Compliance under such circumstances amounts to being complicit in the erosion of your nation’s freedom.
Responsibility lies with us all. The more the populace is backed into a corner, the more they will resist, even revolt. The hands of the clock continue to move, and any enforcement of wrongful laws or mandates makes you culpable. Being an adversary to your people will be a heavy burden to bear.
Increasing attempts to stifle voices are observed across various tech platforms, with only a few, including Twitter, still upholding the torch of free speech.
Free speech is the lifeblood of a democratic society. It fuels debate, cultivates ideas, and promotes the open exchange of views. It holds authority accountable, protecting citizens from potential autocracy. Its erosion or limitation fractures the very foundations upon which our societies have been built.
The time has indeed come to pick a side. Will you be an upholder of freedom and democracy, or will you be a bystander to the erosion of these values? In this pivotal moment in our history, our decisions will shape the legacy we leave for future generations. We must not be found wanting. It’s time to decide, and the choice is ours.
